How Much Does a Deck Cost in Central Alabama?

If you're planning a new deck, one of the first questions you'll likely have are cost related. The honest answer is: it depends on size, materials, design, and structural requirements. A properly built custom deck is a long-term investment NOT a short-term upgrade.

At Cahaba Contracting, we build decks engineered for durability, code compliance, and long-term performance in Alabama’s climate. Residential building code is the BARE MINIMUM. Below is a realistic breakdown of what homeowners can expect.

If you're comparing strictly on price, we may not be the right fit. Our projects are built around long-term durability, proper techniques, and completing the job correctly the first time.

Average Deck Cost in Alabama

For a professionally and properly built custom deck in our area:

  • Pressure-treated wood decks: typically start around $40–$60 per square foot.

  • Composite decking systems: typically range from $65–$80+ per square foot.

  • Larger or elevated structures with stairs, upgraded railing systems, and custom features increase accordingly

Most of our projects fall between:  $12,000 – $55,000+ depending on scope.

If you're planning a deck replacement under $8,000, it's important to understand that material costs, structural requirements, and code compliance typically make that range unrealistic for a properly built deck.

What Impacts Deck Pricing?

1. Size & Layout

Square footage matters, but layout complexity matters more. Multi-level decks, angled designs, and custom stair systems increase labor and framing time.

2. Height & Elevation

Ground-level decks are simpler. Elevated decks require:

  • Ladders or scaffolding

  • Stair systems

  • Lateral bracing

  • Guardrails

These requirements add a substantial framing time and material cost in some scenarios.

3. Material Choice

  • Pressure-treated lumber is the most budget-conscious option.

  • Composite decking offers lower maintenance and longer lifespan but costs more upfront.

  • Premium railing systems (metal, cable, composite) increase pricing dramatically and are typically required with composite decking.

4. Soil Conditions & Footings

Alabama clay soil and moisture conditions require proper footing depth and concrete volume. Cutting corners here leads to shifting and failure. Framing above uneven or challenging terrain adds framing time.

5. Stairs & Access Points

Each stair run adds framing, materials, and labor. Wider stairs and landings increase investment.

6. Permits & Code Compliance

Proper builds meet current IRC standards and local building requirements. Code-compliant framing and inspections protect your investment, your family, and the builders. Because of this, we will not under any circumstances build below local code requirements simply to suit budget. Beware of a contractor that will. Is sacrificing your families safety worth saving a few dollars?

Why Cheap Decks Fail

Low-cost deck installations often cut corners in:

  • Ledger attachment – This is a big one we see so often with poorly built decks. If your deck builder says "We can re-use the ledger" RUN. Your ledger may look fine but what's behind it is what's dangerous. Old style flashing (if present at all) is usually damaged, installed incorrectly, or deteriorated. This allows water to rot your homes non-treated sheathing and band joist. This is a MAJOR problem and MUST be corrected before building a new deck.

  • Flashing

  • Beam, joist and post sizing. **Support posts should be MINIMUM 6x6. Girders (joist support beams) should be a MINIMUM 2-ply 2x12 and NEVER supported solely by fasteners. Floor joists should be MINIMUM 2x10.**

  • Joist spacing – Joists should NEVER be spaced more than 16" on center, 12" on center for composite decking.

  • Footing depth

  • Joist blocking – Blocking should always be installed over girders and mid-span between joists.

  • Hardware – Joist hangers, post to beam connectors, and hurricane ties are imperative for a safe structure. The fasteners used for these pieces are also extremely important.

The result?

  • Premature sagging

  • Structural movement

  • Safety issues

  • Expensive repairs within a few years

A deck should last 15–25+ years when built correctly and properly maintained.

Wood vs Composite: Long-Term Cost Consideration

Pressure-treated wood:

  • Lower upfront cost

  • Requires yearly staining and maintenance

  • Can crack, warp, or check over time

Composite decking:

  • Higher initial investment

  • Minimal maintenance

  • More consistent long-term performance

  • Better resistance to moisture and humidity

For many Alabama homeowners, composite makes sense when evaluating 10–15 year ownership cost.

Is a Custom Deck Worth the Investment?

A properly built deck:

  • Expands usable living space

  • Increases property appeal

  • Enhances outdoor lifestyle

  • Adds long-term value

More importantly, it must be built structurally sound from the start.
